On December 25, 2020, Steven (Steve) Thomas Smalley, our loving husband, father, son, brother, uncle and friend unexpectedly passed away. Steve was born in Gallup, New Mexico on January 12, 1964 to Joseph Smalley and Lynda (Smalley) Groves and grew up as the youngest of four boys. He graduated from Gallup High School and received a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture, Major in Animal Science, with emphasis in Meat Technology and Minor in Horse Management at New Mexico State University. Steve married the love of his life, Bernadine (Gomez) Smalley, on August 17, 1985.
Steve will always be remembered for his easy smile, kind heart, great sense of humor and desire to help others. Faith, family, and the great outdoors were the most important parts of his life. He treasured his Catholic faith loving the Lord with his whole heart and served as a member of the Knights of Columbus. Steve was a true example of unconditional love and it was easy to see by the joy he took in caring for Bernadine and being his children’s biggest supporter in all their endeavors. Steve had a passion for the outdoors that kept him busy with hunting, camping, fishing, golfing and running. He had a “green thumb,” always enjoyed gardening and sharing the fruits of his labor. Steve had a passion for the meat industry ever since he graduated from college and had been working for JBS USA, in Greeley, Colorado, for the past 22 years.
Steve is preceded in death by his father, Joseph Smalley, grandparents, Royal and Helen Smalley and Leon and Dora Wallace. He is survived by his loving wife of 35 years, Bernadine (Gomez) Smalley, daughter, Ashlee (Peter) Holguin, and son, Steven Smalley (fiancé, Ally Burwell and her son, Dustin Davidson), mother, Lynda Groves, brothers, Mike (Sandy) Smalley, Leon (Terri) Smalley, Joe (Michelle) Smalley and many cousins, nephews, nieces and family who loved him dearly.
We are saddened by the unexpected loss of our dear husband, father, son, brother, uncle and friend Steve T. Smalley, but our hopes are to celebrate his life with each new day.
In the words of another cowboy Steve enjoyed watching: “Tomorrow is the most important thing in life. Comes into us at midnight very clean. It's perfect when it arrives and it puts itself in our hands. It hopes we've learned something from yesterday.” ― John Wayne
